Eyes Wide Shut
My heart is racing, my legs are pumping. With a quick glance over my shoulder, I realize the officer is gaining on me. I turn the corner and hide in one of the alleys, dark and filthy, but it'll do. Covering my mouth with my hand should help reduce the noise produced by my air-thirsty lungs. The NYPD officer, puzzled, does a 360, looking for me. With a look of disappointment and anger, he turns back and heads back to the station. Relief.
After a short breather, I rise and exit the dirty alley, and as I walk down the road, something about it seems oddly familiar. I recognize these street names. My old apartment is less than a block away! I sprint towards the haven which I once called home, my legs oblivious to the previous chase. But something's off. The more I run, the farther away I get. Tired, I fall onto my knees, cursing the world.
Over in the distance, I see two people, a couple, talking in front of my old house. The woman is wearing a beautiful blue dress with a gold marriage ring. The man is wearing a suit with a purple tie, holding a yellow umbrella. Running up the street is a young boy, no older than five, who then proceeds to jump into the man’s arms. No doubt his father; the resemblance is uncanny. The little boy, tugging on his father’s tie, points to a bright rainbow in the sky.
After a brief moment of smiles, the family walks into the building. A few moments later, a light flickers on up on the third floor. Although it is far away, my vision is perfect, and I can see into the room. Immediately, the mother turns on the stove and starts to prepare a household recipe. Meanwhile, the father is sitting on the sofa, reading to his son a classic story. Once the meal is ready, the energetic boy jumps over to the dinner table, soon joined by his two parents. The wife's left ring finger is bare. Suddenly, the ground below me begins to shake. A sinkhole starts forming behind me, starting off small, but quickly expanding, swallowing everything on its way out. Try as I might, I cannot outrun the ever increasing radius of certain doom. Falling into the dark abyss, I know I'm hopeless.
